Using technology safely and appropriately

IMPORTANT:

This is a NEW prompt on an 'open' genre. As such if you choose to redeem your existing allocation of scoring and feedback on an essay written to this prompt, please note well that:

  • NO scoring will be provided on the essay. You effectively forfeit your essay scoring. Why can't we score essays on these prompts? Scoring is done in a controlled manner using 52-points and is heavily tested before being deployed. It is not yet ready for use and will likely not be ready for another 6-12 months. However,
  • An essay feedback video will be provided that spans 6-10 minutes covering 2 to 3 areas of the following available areas of evaluation: meeting prompt requirements, selection of ideas, organisation of ideas, structure of written piece, sentence formation and grammar.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Please write your response in the below box. You can also include your notes and if doing so, please note this separately in the box i.e., use a heading for 'Notes' and 'Response'. The task below tests how well you can come up and develop ideas in an appropriate response to the prompt along with how well you can communicate your ideas in writing. Make sure you plan and organise the layout of your response so that your message can be conveyed effectively.

You have 30 minutes to complete your response and outside materials and resources such as dictionaries, are not permitted.

Using technology safely and appropriately

In Grade 5, students start using a laptop with internet connection at school. As an older student, your teacher has asked you to write an advice sheet for younger students on two matters: first, how to stay safe and protect themselves online, and secondly, what constitutes appropriate conduct when working online and with a laptop. This is to ensure that the younger students have a smooth transition when starting to use their laptop for school work.
