18. Revision & Final Exam




You’ve finished the course now. But before you go let’s do revision and a final exam!

Revision Points

To do well in your reading comprehension exam, remember: identify type, if can complete quickly, then solve, if not, move on and return with the last resort being, guess.

This will help you move through quickly but also help with getting a higher quantity of questions correct.

Overarching points to remember for each of the checkpoints are:

  • Critical Test Strategies – Focus your reading and keep to the time limit
  • What's Certain and What's Not? – Absolutes can be easy options to eliminate
  • Narrative - Literal – Know parts of a narrative to work through quickly
  • Narrative - Figurative – Tone questions are big here and use an on-balance key word approach
  • Narrative - Implied – Not everything is said
  • Non-Fiction - Provided – Look a structure to locate items quickly
  • Non-Fiction - Implied – Use hints to make inferences
  • Interviews – Look at who’s talking and why
  • Historical Texts – Can be a mix of questions because of the mix of fiction and fact
  • Autobiographical Texts – The author’s perspective is showcased
  • Poetry - Structure – Stanzas and lines and repetition and rhyme
  • Poetry - Meaning – Extend the meaning beyond what is said – use hints.
  • Cartoons - Imagery – Look at different dimensions – white space, who, what, colors
  • Cartoons - Language – Often uses humour and comedic devices
  • Punctuation – Helps to create tone but also structure in a piece
  • Proverbs – Find the relationship between key words and then extend

This is the exam that most people will practice with, unless you are doing a Year 9 entry selective school or scholarship test, in which case, you’ll download, print and complete this exam (Your time limit: 30 minutes. Number of questions: 50).
