You’ve finished the course now. But before you go let’s do revision and a final exam!
Revision Points
To do well in your maths (Grade 9 entry) exam, remember: identify type, if can complete quickly, then solve, if not, move on and return with the last resort being, guess.
This will help you move through quickly but also help with getting a higher quantity of questions correct.
Overarching points to remember for each of the checkpoints are:
- The Basics - Operators, Fractions, Geometry, Units, Worded Questions – The scope at Year 9 entry level is wide, make sure you’ve mastered these areas.
- Number Patterns – Use the general rules with number pattern detection for numbers going up and down.
- Shapes and Angles – Familiarise yourself with 2D & 3D shapes and their relevant calculations (area, perimeter, volume) and know the different types of angles and that a ‘whole’ is 360 degrees.
- Pythagoras' Theorem – a² + b² = c²
- Exponents – Know the rules to add, subtract etc… with exponents.
- Surds – a number (written in a special way) that cannot be simplified to remove a square root (or cube root etc).
- Basic Algebra - Simplifying – Know the different ways to deal with variables.
- Expansion and Factorisation – Expand means to multiply out and remove brackets while factorisation asks you to find common terms.
- Linear Equations – +/-n₁x +/- n₂
- Basic Quadratic Equations – Know what n₁,n₂ and n₃ represent.
- Rearranging Equations – To rearrange, isolate out the subject of the formula by doing the inverse on both sides.
- Functions - A function is an equation that has 1 answer for y for every x.
- Basic Trigonometry – Know the parts of a triangle (internal angles, hypotenuse etc…)
- Trigonometric Ratios – SOH CAH TOA
- The Unit Circle (Basic) – Know the key values in a unit circle and the positive/negative values in a given quadrant.
