1. Introduction

Mathematics in competitive entrance exams test:

  • Knowledge of mathematical concepts.
  • Understanding of the question.
  • Mathematical reasoning.

Mathematic questions that ACER test do not involve complicated maths but rather it requires you to know WHAT to use. The ACER mathematics test often also includes numerical reasoning components so make sure you complete the numerical course to get a complete grounding for the maths test.

Mathematic questions in Edutest are more likely to emphasis knowledge of the content more widely.

In this course, we'll go through:

  • Knowledge building
  • Reasoning

The course is structured via:

  • Base knowledge
  • Extension knowledge (Year 9).

We heavily base it on going through illustrated examples.

This course is meant to be self-contained, however, we don't go through the basics and we also recommend going through a text book for Year 7 and Year 9. You can obtain one by speaking to your librarian. If you have problems with this, just email me at success@examsuccess.com.au.

This is a process I encourage you to take:

  • Preparation*
  • Assess your time constraint*
  • Read the question and understand it*
  • Formulate or work out your answer
  • Test and complete your answer

This is because the math test is:

  • Testing knowledge of mathematical concepts and then,
  • Applying knowledge of mathematical concepts
  • Why is it much more difficult?
    • Big picture understanding
    • Range of stimuli in question & answer

Rarely do mathematics question hang by themselves, they are always in combination with another operator e.g. algebra with expansion or worded questions with fractions etc…

For example:

  • Justin Bieber had a concert in Australia and attendees were split 60% between children (representing the 60%) and parents. There were altogether 160 attendees representing an 80% of the total number of ticket sales. How many parents didn't attend but bought tickets?
  • What's the 'Big Picture Understanding' behind this?

The great thing with mathematics is that is has a definite correct answer and there are multiple ways of getting to the correct answer.

Now it's time to do your assignment.

  1. Download the assignment question here.
  2. Print it out or if you want to do it electronically, save it.
  3. Complete the questions to it.
  4. Then check the solutions on the video below or download the ANSWER KEY here.
