Colour is an area of pattern that can exist within abstract or non-verbal reasoning.
The pattern types involve in colours could be:
- Absence and presence of colour e.g. Black, then white, then black.
- Changes in shades of colour e.g. Black, grey, white and repeated.
- Patterns within colour e.g. dotted, clear, dotted.
Let's have a visual look at some:

Here are the patterns:
Box 1 : Pattern is that each column or row as at least 1 white block, 1 black block and 1 grey block.
Box 2 : Colouring is dotted black and grey.
Box 3 : Pattern is a grid of black and white.
Box 4 : Colouring is diagonal stripes.
While the patterns that you see above are simple and straightforward, in the exam you will have colour:
- Within specific parts of an image. Check to see if there is a pattern there.
- That can also work in combination with direction or position and other types of patterns.
Now, let's go through some sample questions:

Example 2

Key Rules to remember:
- Colours patterns may be present in abstract reasoning.
- Patterns are alternations of Black and white or can be a mixture of other shades, or remain static that is, they stay the same colour.
- Colour patterns are usually part of an element e.g. might be the arrow part of the arrow or the stalk part. You need to identify that.
