7. Colours

Colour is an area of pattern that can exist within abstract or non-verbal reasoning.

The pattern types involved with colours are generally:

  • Absence and presence of colour e.g. Black, then white, then black.
  • Changes in shades of colour e.g. Black, grey, white and repeated.
  • Patterns within colour e.g. dotted, clear, dotted.

Let's have a visual look at some:

image

Here are the patterns:

Box 1 : Pattern is that each column or row as at least 1 white block, 1 black block and 1 grey block.

Box 2 : Colouring is dotted black and grey.

Box 3 : Pattern is a grid of black and white.

Box 4 : Colouring is diagonal stripes.

While the patterns that you see above are simple and straightforward, in the exam you will likely have colour:

  • Within specific parts of an image. Check to see if there is a pattern there.
  • That may also work in combination with direction or position and other types of patterns.

Because abstract reasoning involves visual pattern detection, let’s apply this to the following question/s.

Key Rules to remember

  • Patterns are alternations of Black and white or can be a mixture of other shades, or remain static that is, they stay the same colour.
  • Colour patterns are usually part of an element e.g. might be the arrow part of the arrow or the stalk part.

Practice time!

Now, it's your turn to practice.

Click on the button below and start your practice questions. We recommend doing untimed mode first, and then, when you're ready, do timed mode.

Every question has two solutions videos after you complete the question. The first is a quick 60 second video that shows you how our expert answers the question quickly. The second video is a more in-depth 5-steps or less explainer video that shows you the steps to take to answer the question. It's really important that you review the second video because that's where you'll learn additional tips and tricks.

Once you're done with the practice questions, move on to the next checkpoint.

Now, let’s get started on your practice questions.
