18. Revision & Final Exam

You’ve finished the course now. But before you go let’s do revision and a final exam!

Revision Points

To do well in your abstract reasoning exam, remember: identify type, if can complete quickly, then solve, if not, move on and return with the last resort being, guess.

This will help you move through quickly but also help with getting a higher quantity of questions correct.

Overarching points to remember for each of the checkpoints are:

  • Critical Test Strategies – images are made up of individual parts, separate them to make it easier to see a pattern.
  • Direction – North, south, east, west, north-west etc… which direction is something facing? What are opposing directions?
  • Position – Where is something located? How has it moved – left to right, up — down?
  • Rotation – look at degrees, but how much from a starting point has something changed and is rotation clockwise or anti-clockwise? Common rotations are 90° and 45°.
  • Size – increasing/decreasing in size, repetition in size?
  • Colours – is there repetition in colours, alternating colours, a certain number of items with a set colour?
  • Angles – how wide is a particular angle and is it increasing, decreasing?
  • Superimposition – when something is layered on top/below and removed/added to – look for additions and reductions of parts or wholes.
  • Transformations – are sides/corners increasing/decreasing?
  • Tricky pattern types & approaching "odd one out" questions – group like images starting with 2 and then add.
  • Inverse – is a swap over.
  • Flips – the left becomes right for horizonal and for vertical, the top is on the bottom.
  • Stacks – the bottom layer becomes the top if flipped and pay attention to type of flip (vertical, horizontal).
  • Ordering – find polar ends first and then work inwards for the ‘middle’ image and for the first/last, look at most/least.
  • Letters in patterns – find repeating letters that would represent a shape (common and what’s not).
  • Numbers in patterns – understand possible number patterns when things go up/down/alternate and more.
